WHY IS UNE?

By 1973 teachers in the Northeast part of the state decided they needed to have a full-time professional staff person to help them do all the things they wanted to do as a union (association) of professionals. In September 1973, a staff person, Larry Gerue was employed and on the job. He shared an office and secretarial staff with the Green Bay UniServ unit. As the membership of UNE and Bayland Educators grew, Dennis Muehl and Ron Bacon were hired. In 1990, ESP members and locals were added to UNE and Bayland Educators.

WHO GOVERNS UNE?

Once a year locally elected local teacher and ESP delegates meet at the UNE Representative Assembly. The Assembly delegates review the UniServ activities and programs; adopt a program budget for the year's activities; determine the organizational policies and procedures; and elect a governing board.

WHAT IS UNE?

The UNE UniServ unit is a labor union made up of thirty-seven (37) locals. UNE shares offices, and some staff, with sister Bayland Educators UniServ, which is made up of thirty-three locals. Each local is composed of those teachers or Educational Support Personnel (ESP) employees who are able to join because they are members of a local affiliate bargaining unit. Currently more than 6,500 area school employees are represented by UNE and Bayland.
