Luck teachers demonstrate their support of lifelong learning by presenting a "scholarship to the community" in the form of a $1,000 donation to the Luck Library Museum, which is in the process of being built. Presenting and accepting the check are Luck NUE President and science teacher Marty Messar, Luck public librarian Jil Glover, fund-raising chairman Tam Howie, physical education and math teacher Sheila Brom, 4th-grade teacher Sue Wallin, Luck Historical Society member Chuck Edleman, 3rd-grade teacher Nancy Beduhn, and music teacher Jann Holdt.
“This is a scholarship to the community,” said Holdt. Every election day in November for the past 38 years, the union has sponsored a pancake supper for the community, and the money raised is used for college scholarships for seniors. Originally only one scholarship was given; now there are two. The additional donation this year was a significant decision, spearheaded by a committee consisting of Brom, Wallin, Holdt, and Beduhn.
“The community has always been very supportive of us," said union president Messer. "This is one of the opportunities for us to give back.” This mutual support reflects the motto of Luck Schools: Preparing Lifelong Learners and Responsible Citizens. A larger and more accessible public library and museum is an excellent way to promote literacy and learning as well as a sense of pride in the area.
