Celebrate Public Education November 14-20

Join your WEAC and NEA colleagues for a week of celebration November
14-20 for the 83rd annual American Education Week. The event celebrates
great schools and the partnerships between teachers, support staff,
students, parents and the community.
This year's theme, "Celebrating the American Dream," reflects
WEAC's and NEA's mission to advocate for the nation's public schools,
school employees, and the communities they serve.
Wednesday, November 17 is the annual National Education Support Professionals
Day. It is a special day to honor school support staff - the secretaries,
classroom aides, maintenance people, cafeteria workers, bus drivers
and others whose services to schools are invaluable.
NEA members, parents, administrators and community members will honor
the contributions of substitute teachers on Friday, November 19. The
2003 NEA Representative Assembly created Substitute Educators Day in
appreciation for the service substitute teachers provide to continue
quality education in the temporary absence of regular classroom educators.
The National Education Association and the American Legion teamed up
to host the first American Education Week in 1921 as a way to generate
public support for education. In 1987, NEA's Representative Assembly
added Education Support Professionals Day to American Education Week
to honor the contribution of school support staff.
School staff, parents and community members can make AEW 2004 a success
by engaging in activities that deepen community involvement in public
schools. The NEA has compiled a list of possible
activities and materials for
use in Wisconsin's schools.
