Weac Members Nominated For Presidential Awards
Six WEAC members received nominations
for the National Science Foundation's Presidential Awards for Excellence
in Mathematics and Science Teaching program.
State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster nominated three math teachers
and three science teachers for the awards, which are only open to elementary
teachers this year. In 2005, the program is open to secondary teachers.
"Our nominees for Presidential Teaching Awards represent the best
of a cadre of outstanding mathematics and science teachers in our state's
schools," Burmaster said.
The math nominees are:
- Nancy Jo Grochowski, Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association member;
- Jane Maki, Northwest United Educators member; and
- Kathleen Snyder, La Crosse Education Association member.
The science nominees are:
- Sharon Hushek, Franklin Education Association member;
- Martha Kronholm, Wisconsin Rapids Education Association member;
and
- Lynn Raley, Platteville Education Association member.
The six nominees will be honored this fall in Madison during a recognition
ceremony and reception. Each will receive National Certificates for
Excellence in Teaching Mathematics and Science.
Two of Wisconsin's nominees – one science teacher and one math
teacher – will become Presidential Teaching Award winners. They
will join the winners from the other 49 states, District of Columbia,
Puerto Rico, U.S. territories and Department of Defense schools in Washington,
D.C., next spring for recognition events.
Each winner will also receive a Presidential Citation and $10,000 to
improve science or math instruction.
