State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster has nominated six WEAC members for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The teachers are nominated in one of two categories - science or mathematics.

The mathematics nominees are:

  • Jeremy Kessenich, Mount Horeb High School.
  • Kali Kocmoud, New Richmond High School.
  • Michelle Parks, Northstar Middle School, Eau Claire.

The science nominees are:

  • David Kreutz, Burlington High School.
  • Marian Schraufnagel, Mukwonago High School.
  • Susan Whitsett, Fond du Lac High School.

The six finalists will receive National Science Foundation State Certificates for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics and Science at an awards program and reception this fall in Madison.

One Wisconsin educator in each category will receive the Presidential Teaching Award, $10,000 to improve science or math instruction, a Presidential Citation, and a trip to Washington, D.C. next spring to participate in a recognition ceremony.

This year, the awards are given to secondary education teachers. Elementary teachers will be given the awards in 2004.
