The Wisconsin Education Association Council stands behind the efforts of the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association to promote solutions that will result in improved student learning, WEAC President Mary Bell said today.

“There are clearly challenges Milwaukee Public Schools are facing and educators want to be actively involved in solutions that will address the growing achievement gaps and ultimately benefit our kids, communities and state,” Bell said. “Our members in Milwaukee care deeply about their schools and are committed to doing what’s right to help their students succeed.”

Bell agreed with MTEA’s stance that mayoral control won’t guarantee that the essential elements needed for any successful school will be provided: small class sizes; safe and secure learning environments; modern technologies and curriculum; and most importantly, highly qualified, caring and competent teachers and support staff.

Bell said the state union will stand with the MTEA in opposing a mayoral takeover of MPS and instead, advocate for reforms that are rooted in proven research and results.

Educators and the community should be involved in improvement plans, whether in MPS or any other Wisconsin school district, Bell said. “We need to work together to strengthen the system that educates our students and improves our communities,” she said.

“A big issue here, one that really needs to be addressed, is that of adequate funding to support all Wisconsin schools.”
