BREAKING NEWS: WEAC members recommend Kathleen Falk for governor

At a news conference held Wednesday, WEAC publicly released its recommendation for Kathleen Falk to unseat Governor Walker in the recall election. In a news release, WEAC President Mary Bell said, "Wisconsin educators have been at the forefront of this movement ever since the first attack on worker rights was leveled nearly a year ago. Today we take the next step."

"WEAC's candidate recommendation adheres to a democratic process that involves members and leaders from across the state," Bell added. "There have been many strong advocates for Wisconsin families who have stepped forward as potential candidates but we believe our members look for a WEAC recommendation guided by the issues our members care deeply about and that's what this recommendation represents."

Bell's comments of support were echoed by educators from other parts of the state - including Bob Peterson, president of the Milwaukee Teachers Education Association. As Peterson said, "Kathleen Falk spoke of the vital importance of supporting public education and providing services and support to the children that need it the most. Her remarks left the crowd standing in applause. She erased any doubt about whether she is the right person for the job and inspired educators to believe that we can reclaim this state."

WEAC member and Wisconsin's 2010 Teacher of the Year Leah Luke said, "I support Kathleen Falk in her bid for Wisconsin governor. Despite being a challenging year for Wisconsin educators, we have remained focused on what is most important - our students. However, we are ready for a change. Kathleen Falk shares our values and vision for a better tomorrow for all Wisconsin students."

We need a leader who supports the values our members hold dear, such as quality public education, ensuring educators can maintain a voice in issues that affect their profession, schools and students - and someone who will respect and value the contributions educators make. And for all of us who have been personally affected by the divisive nature of the last year, Kathleen Falk is someone who is committed to uniting Wisconsin - with a renewed sense of collaboration and innovation to solve challenging problems. It's our hope you'll take the time to learn more about her and what she values.

Kathleen Falk is a stark contrast to Governor Walker. She has a fundamental belief in public education, a commitment to the voice of workers through their unions and a respect for working families. She represents our values for Wisconsin:

High-quality education
Falk makes public schools a priority. She believes in taking a holistic view when it comes to improving Wisconsin education, including finding a better way to fund schools and engaging parents and communities.

Respect for workers
Falk respects the role of unions and collective bargaining. Some candidates may dodge the issue, but Falk has made it very clear that restoring collective bargaining and respecting the role of unions as a voice for employees are top priorities.

Collaboration and fairness
Falk brings people together - that is the kind of leader Wisconsin needs. She has a history of collaboration and understands there's power when people join together for the common good. Falk has talked about bringing unions and management together to solve tough problems.

This is an 11.29 communication to WEAC members and staff.
