Six Wisconsin middle and high school teachers are in the running for Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster called the nominees “inspiration for the improvement of mathematics and science teaching.”
The math nominees are Wanda Bussey, Rufus King High School in Milwaukee; Margaret Hartwig, Marshfield High School; and Michelle Parks, Northstar Middle School in Eau Claire. The science nominees are Nancy AufderHeide, Einstein Middle School in Appleton; Dana Krejcarek, Kohler High School; and Sue Whitsett, Fond du Lac High School.
A panel of state judges will choose one teacher from each field to advance, and the National Science Federation will choose the two national winners. The top two teachers will be awarded a trip to Washington, D.C., for the spring awards ceremony and $10,000.
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching were established in 1983. Middle and high school teachers are honored this year, and elementary teachers will be recognized in 2006. To apply, go to http://www.paemst.org/.
