National Board Seeks Assessors for 2004 Candidate Materials
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
is seeking assessors to score candidate materials.
Successful applicants must have a baccalaureate degree, a valid teaching
license or certificate, a minimum of three years' experience in a pre-K
through 12th-grade setting, and must be currently teaching at least
half-time in the certificate are for which her or she wishes to become
an assessor, or be National Board certified in that area.
Assessors may not be current or previously unsuccessful National Board
candidates, and must complete a training program provided by the NBPTS.
The NBPTS provides a $125 per day honorarium during training and scoring
sessions, which last up to three weeks. All scoring takes place at designated
sites. In 2004, those sites are located in the following cities:
- Mobile, Ala.
- Denver
- Washington, D.C.
- Daytona Beach, Fla.
- Miami
- Atlanta
- Chicago
- Baltimore
- Jackson, Miss.
- Las Vegas
- Princeton, N.J.
- Mt. Laurel, N.J.
- Charlotte, N.C.
- Cincinnati
- Oklahoma City
- Tulsa, Okla.
- Pittsburgh
- Clemson, S.C.
- Dallas
- San Antonio
Most assessors are assigned to scoring sites located within a 50-mile
radius of their homes, but some elect to travel farther. No travel costs
are reimbursed by the NBPTS.
Because the process is an excellent professional development opportunity,
several institutions offer graduate credit to National Board assessors.
To become an assessor, visit the NBPTS
Web site and complete an online application form.
