Madison Recall Effort Fails
An effort to recall Madison school board member Bill Keys over a flap
involving the Pledge of Allegiance has failed. Keys, a retired Madison
teacher, drew criticism for authoring a proposal to require schools to
play an instrumental version of the National Anthem instead of requiring
students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The school boards adoption
of the proposal drew national attention. Opponents began a recall drive,
but failed to gather even half the votes needed to force a recall election.
