66% Give Schools A or B

Sixty-six percent of Wisconsin residents gave Wisconsin public schools overall an A or a B in a survey released over the summer by the Department of Public Instruction.

How do you grade
Wisconsin schools?

A .......... 10%

B .......... 56%

C .......... 31%

D or F ..... 3%

The grades were even higher when residents were asked to assess their local public schools — 73% gave them an A or a B.

The survey of 1,043 residents was conducted last spring by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Survey Center. In other results:

  • More than 88% said teachers in their local public schools are doing a good, very good or excellent job.
  • 80% said reading, writing and math are an “absolutely essential” part of the curriculum, but only 17% said art and music, and only 16% said foreign languages are “absolutely essential.”
  • 49% identified lack of funding as a somewhat serious or extremely serious problem for public schools.
  • 48% said low standards and expectations were a somewhat or extremely serious problem.
