Read Across America Kicks Off Monday
The largest celebration of reading in the U.S. sweeps across Wisconsin
beginning Monday, March 1.
Thousands of Wisconsin students, teachers and communities are participating
in Read Across America, which calls for every child in every community
to be in the presence of a book on March 2, Dr. Seuss"s birthday.
Last year, more than 10 million people participated in the national event,
which was spearheaded by the National Education Association.

Thousands of teachers, parents and community members have planned reading
events throughout Wisconsin once again this year.
The Wisconsin Legislature is scheduled to declare March 2 "Read
Across Wisconsin Day," and the Cat in the Hat is expected to watch
over deliberations.
Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Mike Myers is reading chair for Read
Across Wisconsin. He has taped public service announcements and will do
a live reading from spring training for interested Wisconsin television
stations on March 2. Wisconsin Education Association Council President
Terry Craney will read his favorite Dr. Seuss book to third graders in
Burlington on Monday.
Craney, accompanied by the Cat in the Hat, will read to children at Cooper
Elementary School, 249 Conkey Street, in Burlington at 10 a.m.
"Reading is key to success in life," Craney said. "Studies
show that kids who regularly read for fun do better in school, so events
like Read Across America make reading fun while showing how important
it is."
