Read Across America Kicks Off Monday

The largest celebration of reading in the U.S. sweeps across Wisconsin beginning Monday, March 1.

Thousands of Wisconsin students, teachers and communities are participating in Read Across America, which calls for every child in every community to be in the presence of a book on March 2, Dr. Seuss"s birthday. Last year, more than 10 million people participated in the national event, which was spearheaded by the National Education Association.

“Council President Terry Craney will read his favorite Dr. Seuss book to third graders in Burlington on Monday.”

Thousands of teachers, parents and community members have planned reading events throughout Wisconsin once again this year.

The Wisconsin Legislature is scheduled to declare March 2 "Read Across Wisconsin Day," and the Cat in the Hat is expected to watch over deliberations.

Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Mike Myers is reading chair for Read Across Wisconsin. He has taped public service announcements and will do a live reading from spring training for interested Wisconsin television stations on March 2. Wisconsin Education Association Council President Terry Craney will read his favorite Dr. Seuss book to third graders in Burlington on Monday.

Craney, accompanied by the Cat in the Hat, will read to children at Cooper Elementary School, 249 Conkey Street, in Burlington at 10 a.m.

"Reading is key to success in life," Craney said. "Studies show that kids who regularly read for fun do better in school, so events like Read Across America make reading fun while showing how important it is."
