Hillary Rodham Clinton Visits Janesville School

First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and 1st Congressional District candidate Lydia Spottswood visit the technology lab at Janesville’s Marshall Middle School October 17, 1998. Eighth-grade students Erin Jones (left) and Mark Miller demonstrate a robotic arm as it lifts a model vehicle into the air. Teacher Brad Konopa (back) said he and the students were excited to have the first lady visit their lab. “She’s coming here because of her belief in education,” he said.

Clinton also spoke before a large crowd in the school gymnasium and participated in a roundtable discussion about education innovations at Marshall Middle School, including its advanced technology program and successful discipline initiative.

She expressed strong agreement with the sentiment of teachers, administrators and others who said the key to school improvement is smaller class sizes. Among those participating in the roundtable was Marshall teacher Colleen Neumann.

Earlier the same day, Clinton appeared in Madison on behalf of 2nd Congressional District candidate Tammy Baldwin.
