International Group Backs Public Schools
Four Wisconsin delegates were among more than 1,000 representatives from
about 150 countries at last summers Education International Congress
in Washington, D.C.
There were Mary Bell of Wisconsin Rapids, Glenn Schmidt of Sun Prairie,
and Patricia Hill and Pamela Hill of Wisconsin Rapids.
The Congress debated 42 resolutions dealing with such issues as child
labor, children and war, illiteracy, economic development, protection
of the right to organize, health and teacher training.
Resolution Number 1 titled Global Campaign to Defend and Enhance
Public Education set the tone for the entire Congress. It stated:
Education is the responsibility of the state, and it is the states
duty to define the goals and objectives of education systems to fully
fund them.
