College fights organizing by part-time teachers
More than 700 part-time teachers at Waukesha County Technical College
are waging a battle to join the Waukesha County Technical Educators Association.
The Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission is expected to decide the
issue by January. An election should be held in early 1999.
Menomonie schools to keep Indian logo
After a lengthy controversy, the Menomonie School Board has voted to
keep its Indian logo and nickname. In an advisory referendum last spring,
3,676 residents voted to keep the logo and 2,268 voted to change it. Opponents
say the logo reflects racist attitudes toward Native Americans.
DPI allows vouchers for single-gender schools
The Department of Public Instruction has reversed itself and agreed to
let single-gender private schools participate in the Milwaukee private
school voucher program. Earlier, DPI said six schools would not be eligible
for the program because they discriminate on the basis of gender.
