Teacher of year representative selected
A Gibraltar teacher will represent Wisconsin in the National Teacher
of the Year program. Lauren Mittermann, who teaches sixth-grade language
arts, reading, and social studies at Gibraltar Elementary School, was
selected by the Department of Public Instruction as Wisconsins representative
in the national program for 1998. The National Teacher of the Year winner
will be announced in April.
Gubernatorial, senatorial debates are October 16
Candidates for governor and U.S. Senate will debate on statewide television
October 16. Ed Garvey and Tommy Thompson will lead off the first of two
forums at 7 p.m., taking citizen-based questions from throughout the state.
U.S. Senator Russ Feingold and opponent Mark Neumann will participate
in the second forum at 8 p.m. Wisconsin Debate Night is part
of the We the People Wisconsin program, sponsored in part
by WEAC. It will air on Wisconsin Public Television, Wisconsin Public
Radio, WISC-TV in Madison, and C-SPAN.
AEW observance set for November 15-21
The 77th annual observance of American Education Week will be held November
15-21, while the 11th annual National Educational Support Personnel Day
will be held on Wednesday, November 18. The theme is the same as last
year, Teaching Children to Think and Dream. WEAC will be mailing
packets to UniServs and local presidents.
Convention volunteers sought
WEACs Communications Division is looking for volunteers to distribute
No QEO stickers as people enter the Conventions General
Session on October 29. The division is printing stickers for all members
to wear, along with questionnaires dealing with the QEO. Interested volunteers
are asked to call WEAC Press Secretary Barb Brady at (800) 362-8034, extension
