Judge Moves Up Deadline in Madison Dispute

The deadline for reaching a teachers' contract settlement in Madison has been moved up from November 2 to October 27.

Dane County Judge Richard Callaway said both sides wanted to reach a settlement sooner than November 2. Callaway set aside two courtrooms for 5 p.m. October 27 for the two sides to continue negotiating if they have not reached a settlement by then.

Callaway became involved in the dispute in late August after both sides filed complaints.

Callaway has said he will not allow either side to leave until an agreement is reached. "We are going to go till we drop," he said.

He again set the hearing for a few hours before a Green Bay Packers game, hoping that might be an incentive for reaching a quick agreement. The Packers play the Detroit Lions at 8 p.m. October 27 in a Monday Night Football game.
