Mayville student Kathleen Zarnott got a unique on-court experience at the Kohl Center during the December 30 University of Wisconsin Women’s Basketball game, thanks to a partnership between the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) and UW Athletics. The WEAC Badger Kid is a Wisconsin student nominated for his or her excellence not only in the classroom, but also in the community.
Kathleen was nominated by her mother, Margaret Zarnott, a WEAC member and teacher at Mayville Middle School. In her nomination, she wrote, “Kathleen is an active member of the junior high student council and in the gifted/talented program at her school. Kathleen maintains an A average in all of her classes at school while staying busy with all her activities.” When Ms. Zarnott was informed of Kathleen’s selection, she was on her way to take Kathleen to volunteer.
As part of the sponsorship, Kathleen got an opportunity to be a “ball kid,” sitting under the basket for the game and assisting in wiping the floor and other duties. She was broadcast on the video board during the pre-game shoot around, and received a photograph and autographed item from Coach Bobbie Kelsey. Kathleen was joined on the court by her sister, Mary.
WEAC is proud to sponsor the University of Wisconsin athletics. As in any sport, it takes teamwork to ensure student success in the classroom. Talented and caring teachers, outstanding school staff, involved parents and supportive communities are a winning team for Wisconsin students.
