Graduation Test Delayed by State Budget Problems
The controversial High School Graduation Test is apparently
one of the victims of the states budget deficit. Gov. McCallums
plan to erase a projected $1.117 billion state budget deficit delays
implementation of the test for at least two years.
The proposal has prompted the Department of Public
Instruction to change its plans for the test. The agency has cancelled
plans to administer the test to 10th graders this spring as part of
the process of establishing passing scores for the test. The delay means
the test will initially apply to the class of 2006. It would make
absolutely no sense to test the test this spring on students
(class of 2004) upon whom the test would have no impact, according
to a DPI letter to school district administrators throughout the state.
