WEAC Board Approves New Legislative Agenda
WEACs 2001-2002 Legislative Agenda is now final.
WEACs Board of Directors recently approved the package of 32
proposals, which addresses issues ranging from revenue controls to child
health and safety.
The Legislative Agenda establishes a proactive posture for the organization
that is consistent with WEACs mission. It is a way to combat the
assaults on public schools and education employees of the last decade,
and to promote public education.
WEACs Legislative Committee developed the agenda based on legislative
priorities set by the WEAC Representative Assembly. The committee met
seven times over the course of a year to define the set of issues for
the 2001-2002 agenda. Committee members consulted experts from every
facet of the WEAC organization in developing the agenda.
This year, the committee incorporated Great Schools philosophy and
objectives in the Legislative Agenda.
This agenda highlights WEACs commitment to quality schools,
public involvement in education, and community support for quality schools,
WEAC President Terry Craney said. The Legislature enacted several
very pro-public education bills in the just-concluded session. The new
Legislative Agenda builds upon that success.
The chair of the Legislative Committee will submit the agenda to the
2000 WEAC Representative Assembly.
The issues in the agenda will be used as a basis for recommending candidates
for political office. Once the Legislature returns to session next winter,
WEAC will seek sponsors for the various agenda items.
Proposals in the Legislative Agenda fall under the following categories:
- Alternative education opportunities
- Child health and well-being
- Child readiness to learn
- Class size reduction
- Collective bargaining rights
- Modern classrooms
- Parent and family involvement
- Professional development, recruitment and retention
- Relief from revenue caps
- School safety and discipline
- Special education funding
- Wisconsin Technical College System.
Details of the new Legislative Agenda will posted on OnWEAC over the
next few months.
