Major Education Bills Have Hearings This Week
Several education-related bills, including a repeal of the Qualified
Economic Offer law, are all up for hearing this week at the Capitol.
Five bills are scheduled on the same day.
On Wednesday, January 28, the Assembly Ways and Means Committee will
hear testimony on AB 681, which would repeal the QEO law. WEAC supports
the bill.
AB 681 is the Assembly companion bill to Senate Bill 318, which was
the subject of a Senate hearing last fall.
The Senate bill has been amended by the
Senate Education Committee and is expected to go to the Joint Finance
Committee. AB 681 still contains the original language repealing the
QEO.
At some point, the two bills will likely be merged. At this time, however,
AB 681 is being debated on its own.
The Ways and Means Committee is also scheduled to hear testimony on
AB 144, which reinstates the two-tier school aid formula and eliminates
tertiary aid.
The Senate Education Committee will hear testimony Wednesday on:
- SB 383, which changes charter school laws, including removal of
the requirement that charters be instrumentalities of the school district.
WEAC opposes the measure.
- SB 376, which allows W-2 participants to count technical college
attendance toward their work requirement. WEAC supports the measure.
- SB 341, which prohibits schools from using American Indian names
or images as logos or mascots. WEAC supports the measure.
