67 Wisconsin teachers earn National Board Certification for 2011

Posted: 12/7/2011 3:11:06 PM

Sixty-seven Wisconsin teachers earned National Board Certification this year, the highest national credential available to American educators. The newly certified teachers were announced Wednesday by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Wisconsin now has 851 nationally certified educators. They are among 96,291 nationwide and 6,266 who completed certification this year.

To earn certification, candidates must go through a demanding process that includes submission of four portfolio entries that feature teaching practice and six constructed response exercises that assess content knowledge. The assessments are reviewed by trained teachers in each certificate area to evaluate how well the educator has demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills, and practices. A voluntary process, national certification usually takes between one to three years to complete.

“Wisconsin’s educators are committed each and every day to teaching Wisconsin’s children,” said Mary Bell, a Wisconsin Rapids teacher and WEAC president. “Our educators also happen to be some of the brightest in the country. We educators applaud these teachers, and are proud to offer ongoing support to help our members further their professional skills through rigorous programs such as National Board Certification."

In the most rigorous and comprehensive study to date about National Board Certification, the non-partisan National Research Council found that students taught by National Board Certified Teachers make higher gains on achievement tests than students taught by other teachers.

The total number of these accomplished educators in the United States is now nearly 100,000. Approximately half of all National Board Certified Teachers teach in Title I eligible, high-need schools, as reported by the National Center for Education Statistics.

The top five school districts statewide, by total number of National Board Certified Teachers, are Manitowoc School District (4 new, 31 total); Sheboygan Area (3 new, 26 total); Holmen School District (3 new, 21 total); Milwaukee (2 new, 63 total); and Madison Metropolitan (1 new, 39 total). National Board Certified Teachers are nationally recognized as among the best in the profession.

“Congratulations to Wisconsin’s 67 educators who earned professional certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards this year,” said State Superintendent Tony Evers. “Considered the highest national credential available to American educators, research on national board certification shows that this professional development has a positive impact on student achievement.”
