State Ranks 21st Nationally in 2009 Results

Wisconsin continues its progress in advancing the National Board Certification education reform movement with the announcement of 86 new National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) in 2009. The state ranked 21st nationwide in the number of teachers achieving board certification this year and ranks 19th in the total number of NBCTs over time (676).

“Wisconsin teachers are committed to the success of their students, and that is illustrated by the latest group of educators who have completed this rigorous, challenging process,” said Mary Bell, president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council. “The benefits National Board Certified Teachers bring go far beyond individual classrooms, as these educators serve as mentors and resources to their school districts, creating highly effective schools. The state’s union of educators applauds these teachers for their accomplishment and for their dedication to Wisconsin’s students.”

“Dedicated educators are the heart of any educational change. National Board Certification requires educators to deepen their content knowledge and improve their professional practice,” said Wisconsin State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers. “A recent report by the National Research Council recognized that the rigorous process of earning National Board Certification is proven to have a positive impact in the classroom and on student learning. We need more National Board Certified Teachers in Wisconsin’s public schools working to ensure every child is graduate ready for the workforce or further education.”

Wisconsin shows a 15 percent increase in the number of teachers who achieved National Board Certification in 2009 over last year.

Wisconsin NBCTs joined the ranks of nearly 8,900 accomplished teachers nationwide who achieved certification in 2009. This achievement brings the total number of teachers certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) to more than 82,000.

A voluntary assessment program designed to develop, recognize and retain accomplished teachers, National Board Certification is achieved through a performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete. While state licensing systems set basic requirements to teach in each state, NBCTs have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices.

Just a quick reply to John Weyers comment about the number of certified teachers in North Carolina. The number of certified teachers in NC is higher than most because NC pays for the fees to go through the National Board process.

    My additional 2 cents :)
Earning National Board Certification is a huge accomplishment. As an NBCT, class of 2006, I can say that the large amount of time and dedication contributed to the process is so well worth it. The National Board journey was one of the best professional development experiences I have experienced.

My hope is that others take on this challenge and see for themselves how the process can make each person a better teacher!!

Again, congrats to all who certified in 2009. To those who are now advanced candidates--we are still here for you to help you along the rest of your journey!!

I know everyone is trying to rate education and to give value to objective standards in education, but sometimes I have found that there is no objective standard for the final project we call an educated adult.

I don't want to belittle the achievement of those who received their certification.  I want to congratulate them and wish them the best in the classroom.  I understand the time and effort which went into their studies.  I am a retired teacher and have seen other efforts which benefitted the teacher without making the education of the student as a whole any better.

Case in point:  North Carolina is a shining star with their numbers of certified teachers.  Please look at the education in North Carolina and compare it to Wisconsin.  I think that Wisconsin is far better in the "finished project" while North Carolina shines in their numbers.

The teacher is the most important "item" in the education of kids.  Sometimes the achievements of the teacher makes that better, but most of all I feel it IS the teacher.  Wisconsin has the best teachers...not necessarily the most number certified.

Big thanks to WEAC for all its support -- from the Get Started Writing Retreat to mentor workshops during convention. WEAC is supporting teachers going from good to GREAT!   The support of WEAC was noticed and appreciated!

Congratulations to all the teachers who earned their certification this year. The process is very challenging, and you've shown your extreme dedication and talent, first by committing to the process then by sticking with it and making it through!
