West Bend education supporters win funding victory

Posted: 10/27/2009 4:13:45 PM

After a public hearing in which educators and supporters of quality education fought strongly for fair funding of schools, the West Bend School Board Monday night voted in favor of a maximum 10.9% increase in the district tax levy.

The vote ended a monthlong debate in which some argued strenuously for $2 million in cuts to the district's programs to keep taxes down.

In Monday's final meeting, attended by about 800 people, supporters of education funding significantly outnumbered proponents of budget cuts, and the school board voted, 7-0, to do what it could to protect the quality of education, at least for now.

In contrast to earlier meetings, Monday night's crowd was polite, but the mood was somber. Attendees were warned that, despite Monday's vote, ongoing reductions in state aid could lead to severe cuts in education programs in the next few years.

I, too, congratulate the West Bend School Board Members for making the right choice to increase the tax levy.  The adequate funding of schools meant so much for the kids but much more for the community's future.

If you are reading this, it is a beautiful day and you are alive despite a unanimous board decision that undoubtedly rippled the tranquility of your lives, your families, and your relationships.

I know you are still receiving ugly and mean-spirited emails from people who didn't get what they want.

I know you are still receiving ugly and mean-spirited emails from people who no matter how well you explain and justify your decision to them, they will never accept your decision.

    However,

On an extremely complex issues affecting thousands of people...

    You said, "Wait."

You listened to all stakeholders who came forward and you sought out those who did not come forward.

You listened with your hearts and you acted with your minds.

You voted according to what you believe is logical, rational, and right.

Thus, You have my support and understanding in retaining what our school district offers now and improving on these offerings in the future.

Thank you for being what a board should be: Listeners, Communicators, Bridge-Builders, Preservers, Helpers, and Leaders.

    Sincerely,
