As a Senate committee released the details of a new health insurance bill, the NEA reiterated its support of creating affordable access to health care for everyone.
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP) released the full text of its long-awaited health care reform bill. The bill sets up a government plan to provide coverage for those who are uninsured, requires individual health insurance for everyone and provides subsidies to make coverage more affordable. The details of the bill can be found here.
“NEA applauds this plan, which will provide a health safety net for 9 million uninsured children and their families regardless of employment status and current health condition,” NEA President Dennis Van Roekel said. “America is ready for a health care system that works to keep us healthy. Our educators know that quality health care is a crucial ingredient for successful public schools. Without basic dental and medical care, how can our children focus on learning? How can sick parents foster a good learning environment at home?
“NEA stands firmly behind President Obama and Congress on getting this done. Americans deserve quality, affordable health care coverage either through their employer or via a public option. We must do this now in order to improve our collective health and control spiraling health care costs.”
