State Rep. Scot Jensen admitted that he made false accusations against State Supreme Court Candidate Walter Kelly.
Jensen, who is the governor's former chief of staff, is working for the campaign of Justice Jon Wilcox, Kelly's opponent in the April 1 election.
Jensen wrote a memo falsely stating that Kelly, a Milwaukee labor lawyer, had defended cocaine dealer Tony Peters.
The memo was widely distributed and became a topic on conservative Milwaukee radio talk shows hosted by Charles Sykes and Mark Belling.
"I'm sorry, I made an error," Jensen said last week when the memo was finally tracked to him.
Kelly never met Tony Peters and had no dealings with him, although he did purchase Peters' former home in 1984 after it was forfeited to the federal government.
Wilcox said he didn't know about the memo, but Kelly said Wilcox should take responsibility.
"It is wrong for you to shrug your shoulders and claim no responsibility and then with a wink and a nod allow your campaign to continue to distort my record," Kelly said in a news release.
"A candidate is ultimately responsible for his campaign. I am requesting that you openly admit responsibility for the actions of your campaign and offer a public apology, not to me, but to the people of this state for breaking your word and allowing your people to lie to the public," he said.
WEAC members have voted to support Kelly on April 1.
