Incumbent John Benson will again face Hortonville strikebreaker Linda Cross in a rematch of the 1993 race for state superintendent. Benson and Cross were the top vote-getters in a field of seven candidates in the February 18 primary election. Benson captured 44% of the vote to Cross 27%.
In 1993, Benson defeated cross 53% to 47%. In that race, Cross based her campaign primarily on her support of private and religious school vouchers.
Cross was a strikebreaker in the tumultuous 1974 Hortonville teachers strike in which all 84 Hortonville teachers were fired. Cross still teaches in Hortonville.
In an editorial just prior to this years primary, the Wisconsin State Journal said Cross comes across as a single-issue candidate and an erratic personality.
WEAC members have overwhelmingly recommended the re-election of Benson.
Benson is a former teacher and administrator. He was superintendent of Marshall Public Schools from 1972 to 1981 and from 1989 to 1993. Benson is running on his record of accomplishments over the last four years. Benson says:
