Northside School in Middleton raises more than $5,000 for Haiti relief

7/9/2010 10:43:58 AM

Northside Elementary School in Middleton organized a very successful Haitian Relief project. Over a four month period, the students, parents and staff participated in different activities, challenges and goals each month in order to help our neighbors in Haiti after the devastating earthquake.

In February they kicked off with, "Our Hearts Were With Haiti," with the children working odd jobs to earn coins. Next came "March Minutes for Haiti" when the children earned pennies for minutes read at home.

As the fund continued to grow, Northside Staff members took up the challenge during the month of April by serving lunch to the students and bidding for the opportunity to shave the principal's head - during an all-school assembly (photo, right). The principal, Roz Craney, even took his office on the roof for a day to celebrate the milestone of reaching $2,500!

By May "Our Hearts Were Still With Haiti" as staff sponsored the children to complete laps at our PTA Dolphin Dash (a weekly lunch recess walk/run). There were even children who held lemonade stands on the weekend! By June the Northside School community had raised $5,000!

During this project Northside students learned about Haiti and UNICEF, while working together on a common goal of helping others in our world, and at the same time having FUN!!

In the photo above, some of the Northside staff wear T-shirts that were sold, with proceeds going into the Haiti fund.
