Fort Atkinson teachers give to food pantry
9/18/2009 10:53:00 AM

Fort Atkinson teachers donated more than 2,400 items
of food for a local food pantry, with items representing
3,867 hours the teachers put in outside of their contract time.
When the teachers of Fort Atkinson were donating their time this summer getting ready for classes they decided to give back not only to their school but also to the community. In a back-to-school food drive, Fort Atkinson educators donated food items for the pre-contract hours they put in to prep their classrooms, go over lesson plans or work out grading programs.
The effort raised more than 2,400 food items for a Fort Atkinson food pantry, each item corresponding to every two hours the teachers put in outside of their contract time.
“These are donated hours and so we thought we should donate something else as well,” said Lucy Walter, a Fort Atkinson teacher and treasurer of the Fort Atkinson Education Association (FEA).
The Fort Atkinson teachers logged 3,867 hours outside of their contract time in the days leading up to the start of classes in September.
“They planned lessons, put up bulletin boards, and a whole lot of stuff to make sure the school year started successfully,” said Randy Rasmussen, FEA president.
The teachers presented the food items to the Fort Atkinson Board of Education on Thursday (September 18) and had students bring the food to the pantry the next day. Board of Education members applauded when teachers brought the food in on carts and in bags, and thanked the teachers for their effort.
Teacher Denise Engstrom said she got the idea for the food drive when a colleague from another Wisconsin district talked about a similar effort.
“It represents all the time teachers put in to getting ready for the school year,” Engstrom said.
