WEAC President Stan Johnson speaks at a meeting of the Great Lakes Intertribal
Council in Milwaukee Thursday (September 8, 2005). Johnson said he wanted
to "reach out a hand to build a better coalition" between
educators and representatives of the state's Indian community. He said
such a long-term relationship would help teachers develop a better understanding
of Indian culture in Wisconsin and incorporate that into their classrooms.
Ada Deer, the former U.S. deputy of Indian Affairs who
is now the director of the American Indian Studies Program at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison, urged Johnson and WEAC to help make sure schools
are fulfilling the requirements of the state's 1989 Act 31 law requiring
the study of Wisconsin Indian history, culture, and tribal sovereignty
in public schools.
Johnson and tribal representatives agreed to meet in
the future.
