These two young people (Lucas and Alyssa ) are part of
a summer-long program that culminates in an August expedition to the
Cayo District of Belize, where they will help develop an international
leadership training facility. The trip is hosted by Mid-America Xtreme,
a Jefferson County-based initiative that serves at-risk youth ranging
in age from 6 to 21.
Event coordinator Brian Weber said the goal of setting
up a computer lab in Belize became a reality when WEAC donated much-needed
computers to support the program. Six U.S. youth ambassadors will serve
as peer mentors for at-risk youth in Belize. They will work four days
in the lab, spend four days in the jungle exploring, and take one day
for sightseeing.
Weber said the outdoors setting is an ideal environment
for fostering the development of leaders.
Since 1998, Mid-America Xtreme has been working with youth to
build fundamental assets, and develop leadership skills in a backcountry
wilderness setting. We have had huge support from the adventure racing
community as the Watertown Adventure Challenge supports many of Jefferson
County youth programs we facilitate. For WEAC to sponsor our youth eco
tech adventure to Belize is outstanding, Weber said.
Youth enter the Mid-America Xtreme Leadership Initiative through a
referral process conducted by county courts, school districts' human
services programs and private referrals.
