The Janesville Gazette featured this front-page photo coverage of efforts by Rock Valley United Teachers-Retired to collect items for striking workers at the Tyson Foods plant in Jefferson. The photo caption reads:

Members of the Rock Valley United Teachers-Retired gather at Alfresco Cafe in Janesville on Wednesday to collect food items to distribute to striking workers at Tyson Foods in Jefferson. About 470 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 538 have been on strike since February after contract negotiations with Tyson management reached an impasse.

Congratulations, RVUT-Retired!

The following article was submitted by Ron Socwell, vice president of RVUT-Retired:

A large pile of more than 2,000 food items grew quickly on the floor at Alfresco Cafe in Janesville on a recent evening. The food collection party was sponsored by Rock Valley United Teachers-Retired, but the generous donations of active teachers and support staff from Milton, Clinton, Whitewater, Janesville and Beloit made the evening a success. In addition to the non-perishable food, nearly $500 in cash donations were collected that night, and another $500 was sent directly from the Janesville Education Association. There was also a load of donations that came from Capital Area UniServ-North.

Organizers enjoyed the visit of Sen. Judy Robson, who stopped by to write a check in support of these 465 families that have been out of work for 10 months. A couple of vans and five of the strikers showed up in time to pick up the donations at the end of the four-hour party. The management of Alfresco Cafe donated the room and snacks for the people who stopped by to visit and make donations. The Janesville Gazette sent over a photographer.

We are happy with the generosity of all the people who helped make this event a success and hope it will make a difference to the strikers and their families to know that we are behind their efforts.
