Fifth-grade students from Crestwood Elementary School
in Madison competed at a national level on a civics project and received
superior ranking. The competition was sponsored by The Center for Civic
Education and the National Conference of State Legislatures. The focus
of the project was the reinstatement of outdoor morning recess. The students
used the We the People curriculum to organize their efforts to change
Madison school district public policy on recess. Although the resolution
to reinstate the recess failed before the school board on August 11, these
students learned a great deal about active citizenship. The students are
(left to right): Nick Allen, Lindsey Hughes, Chris Houden, Hailey Cross,
Ben Brasser, Katie Pellino, Carlton Hemphill, and Tessa Dorresteyn.
