Joan Chwala, who teaches at Gilman Elementary School,
puts her WEAC Summer Academy training to use at the National American
Legion Auxiliary Convention in St. Louis. Using skills she learned in
the Summer Academy's Public Relations session, Chwala succinctly made
her case in arguing against a motion from the floor. "Using the
tips that I learned as a part of my workshop at the 2003 WEAC Summer
Academy, I prepared my message," Chwala said. "I considered
what I wanted my audience to remember, what I wanted my audience to
believe, and what I wanted my audience to do. I was passionate, personal,
and included supporting evidence for my message." The delegation
listened, and voted with her. Chwala and her colleagues are also putting
their public relations skills to use locally. The Gilman Education Association
will be honored at the WEAC Convention October 30 with an Outreach Award
for a local public relations program called "Live and Laugh with
Literature."
