breakfast

Governor Doyle speaks to Longfellow Elementary School
students in Eau Claire Thursday (October 24, 2003) about the importance
of school breakfast programs. The governor called on the Legislature
to pass a bill guaranteeing that every school in Wisconsin offers a
school breakfast program. Doyle said the federally funded school breakfast
program provides reimbursement to schools to offer free and reduced
price breakfasts for students. Nationwide, of the schools that offer
lunch, 78% also offer school breakfast. Wisconsin is at 44% making
it 50th in the nation. Doyle's proposal was later applauded by WEAC
President Stan Johnson, who said it would go a long way toward ensuring
that children arrive in their classrooms ready to learn. We all
know that nutrition plays a key role in childrens ability to learn,"
Johnson said. "Its unfortunate that a large number of children
dont have a nutritious breakfast at home. In the face of that
reality, schools may need to pick up the slack.
