I am an Adult Basic Education Instructor at the Prairie du Chien Correctional Institute. I work for the Department of Corrections in a prison. We are a unique setting because we deal with non-violent adult men. Many do not have a High School diploma and, therefore, we work with them on getting their HSED or GED. My story starts with a young man out of Milwaukee who entered our system with a drug case (not using but selling). That is the way of life for many young uneducated men from the larger cities - they have difficulty finding and maintaining a job that pays well, especially with no HS diploma, so they turn to drugs (which pays very well). Also include in their background abuse, neglect, lack of any support system, poor decision making skills and poor choice skills. Many lack any sort of values or morals. This young man, that I am taking about, did have some values and some morals - he just lacked education training and guidance. He grew up in a home with little to no support financially, emotionally, and physically - he he knew what he was doing was very wrong. We worked with him to get his HSED. We also enrolled him in Cognitive Intervention class and all of the re-entry modules. These modules include classes in financial literacy, employability, health and wellness, personal and professional development, parenting, transportation, housing, vocational training and skills, and better choice making. This gentlemen left our facility with all that the state can offer - he took advantage of it all. He, as we say, did not do any dead time in prison. As we learned later, he is doing very well. He is struggling, of course, but he is making it. He is one of the many success stories that comes out of the Wisconsin Prison system.
