Our son will be starting kindergarten so this is a new experience for the whole family. We talk often about how kindergarten will be different than preschool and remind him of the changes: a new teacher, new classmates, new playgrounds and other activities.

It was fun to go on a special shopping trip for school supplies during which we talked about all of the exciting opportunities his new school will offer. We have also visited the playground a few times to increase his familiarity with his new school and will be attending a play date scheduled for incoming families.

I agree with Beth, but it's so hard to take that first step to an earlier bedtime when there are only a few weeks of summer vacation left! I'm going to stiffen my spine and get started next Monday!

It sounds so simple, but we're already starting to phase into their "school year" bedtime routine. Having the kids wake up refreshed -- and getting them into a bedtime routine makes a big difference at our house.

It's all about the school shopping! It gets her thinking about school, remembering what she did last year, and excited to start again.

We're also encouraging her to work a little more on some basic skills: reading, counting, etc. so that she gets used to using that part of her brain a little more!

Here's a list of all the ways to avoiding PVC in your back to school supplies!

This will be our first year in school, so we're talking a lot about what's different between how things are now and how they are going to be, talking about all of the exciting changes.  We'll go back to school shopping soon, but are going to wait until a bit closer because time is a hard concept and I want to not "overdo" the excitement and create unnecessary nerves.

My wife and I have our son read at least one hour almost every night so that he stays in the habit of "doing homework" throughout the summer. He really enjoys it. Then, when school starts back up and he is bringing school work home, there is not a big transition.

In our family, we make back-to-school shopping a fun event that includes a trip to a restaurant or ice cream parlor. It gets the kids excited for the start of school.
