Go Back

Let everybody know

By Dustin Beilke

Governor Scott Walker's so-called budget repair bill would cut out the hearts of public employee unions, essentially killing them. Walker also calls for a review of the Wisconsin Retirement System, and calls into question whether Wisconsin retirees should continue to have defined benefit pensions like they do now. We know that what impacts the contracts of active employees often impacts the benefits of retired employees in predictable and unpredictable ways.

We also know that Walker's bill would substantially reduce the standard of living for every public education employee in the state, making it ever less likely that great educators will be able to afford to do the work they were born to do. That hurts kids, limits economic development, and harms everyone in the state.

Apparently some people want it this way. But most people do not, and thousands of people statewide are hitting the streets and having their voices heard. There are rallies, pickets, candle light vigils, phone banks and letter campaigns taking place in every part of our great state.

WEAC.org has several suggestions for how you can join them along with a lot of background information about Walker's bill.

    Hi,

I've been retire since 2005 after serving as HS Guidance Counselor for 32 years.
My husband & I have always believed that teachers should contribute to retirement and HC plans. We have been paying for long-term care. Past payments and benefits of plan will be lost if school boards can unilaterally drop WEA.
Private-sector employees will not be spared from this cruel attack against public-sector union workers. It seems like the back door of Czar Walker's "Open for Business" policy is wide open!!
It's been a plan of conservatives/Republicans for years to destroy their major political competitor. Get rid of unions and what's left to fight their insanity? This country will be dictated by businesses and the rich (which it pretty much is now).
WEA/WREA needs to publicly compare WEA Insurance Trust Plans vs state health plans in chart form for most of the state's newspapers. Critics keep calling WEA a "Cadillac" plan.

    Thanks for your ear.

As a woman, I am curious what % of women Walker's bill would effect compared to the % of women in the Police and Fire Department that it wouldn't effect.     Perhaps this is also a woman's equality issue as well as a union issue?!  I don't know.

Are you aware of any changes to existing signed, contracted, retirement plans for those of us who are already retired?
