Getting Organized

Where to go

By Dustin Beilke

The Capital Times has a great editorial about Governor Scott Walker's so-called budget repair bill and its true motivations: to kill unions.

We know that Walker's bill would substantially reduce the standard of living for every public education employee in the state, making it ever less likely that great educators will be able to afford to do the work they were born to do. That hurts kids, limits economic development, and reduces the possibilities for everyone who lives and works in Wisconsin.

Most people do not want to see this happen. Our job is to communicate with them and get them to raise their voices loud enough for their elected officials to hear. That is what organizing is.

There are rallies, pickets, candle light vigils, phone banks and letter campaigns taking place in every part of our great state. WEAC.org has background on Walker's bill and has many suggestions for how you can join the anti-Walker grassroots efforts taking place in Madison and everywhere else.

You can also call me or e-mail me. My e-mail address is beilked@weac.org and my phone number is 608.298.2500.

See you at the Capitol.

Its amazing how concerned you are for the kids when your taking fraudulent sick days instead of being in the classroom teaching the kids you seem to care about.    These children will be paying for the bankrupt state and federal government from policies bargained for by these unions.

I'm a veteran teacher of 30 years and love my job.  Every day I am honored to stand with children and families in the fight against mediocrity and low standards modeled in movies, television programming, and technology.  Collective bargaining is being blamed for a myriad of problems, none of which will be solved if we turn back the hands of time.  See you at the Capitol.

I represent school employees in California.  I want to express how much I admire and support the school employees, especially the teachers who are standing up to this bully and his minions.  I had hoped to see a schedule of your activities posted somewhere on your site so that not only Wisconsites but others around the country can be there in spirit with you.  Some may want to come and physically support also.

Don't quit.  This is not just a State issue in Wisconsen, it is an issue for all of us.  Be strong.  Two seem to be turning, turn the third!  And then start throwing some of these rascals out of office.

    In Solidarity,

A California Unionist who is proud of what you're doing.

    Hello,

I understand the need to address the budget issues facing our state.  I can even understand asking current public employees to make a contribution to their own retirement and health care benefits, in the short run.  Further, I see that in order to make changes to the retirement and health care benefits of public employees, changes in contract negotiations are required.  Can't these be done on a one-time, short-term basis rather than eviscerating the entire system for years and generations to come?  Also, I have a question - what will happen to the retirement system that those of us nearing retirement have counted on?  We have had significantly less pay in salaries BECAUSE of good benefits such as health care and retirement.  Will this all change just as we are about to retire?

    Thanks,
    Deb Anken-Dyer

Speaking of media coverage...I was watching WMTV channel 15 in Madison this morning and this story was not covered on the 6:30 A.M. broadcast.  Apparently they feel it is more important to discuss ice skating at parks, the warmer weather coming and snowmobiles.  I will never watch their broadcasts, again and I called to tell them so.  As soon as I hear of other businesses who support Walker I will no longer support them with my hard earned dollar.  I am a veteran teacher of 34 years and I deserve more respect!

I want to suggest a proactive plan to our individual and collective responses.  I have just informed Bergstroms that I will not be able to buy the vehicle I was planning to purchase due to the uncertainty caused by Walker's proposal.  It was not a threatened boycott.  I simply let them know that I and, I'm assuming, a lot of other public employees will not be able to purchase big ticket items.  I think we should urge all public employees who may be considering big ticket item purchases to inform the contractor, appliance store owner or car dealer that we won't be able to make any purchases for a while.  I think they need to know the real economic impact to them regarding this cynical proposal.

Secondly,  I also think that instead of always inviting everybody to Madison to protest that we create a few protest hubs such as Madison, Milwaukee, Appleton, Stevens Point, LaCrosse, etc.. so that more local media makets will cover the stories and ultimately more members will be able to take part.  Your asking an awful lot for people to make it to the capitol.

Let's stay united and let everyone what's at stake!

IT makes me so sad that the people we should be giving the most amount of time and attention to right now during these tough times are the people we are taking away from.  WHO is it that will suffer in the long run?  THE KIDS!  They are our future, and we are ripping them off by cutting teachers and making it almost impossible for a teacher to afford to teach.  PLEASE come spend a week in a classroom and see what the teachers are dealing with on a daily basis, THEN and only then, can you tell me that we are doing the best for our future generation.  Teachers need to be held to a very high standard, let's treat them with the respect they deserve.  Get rid of the ones who are not doing their job, but respect the ones who are.  Sad to think this is an option in some peoples' minds.
