State board establishes AAS taskforce
Faculty in the Wisconsin Technical College System won a significant victory on November 17 when the WTCS State Board created a taskforce to study the proposed reconfiguration of the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, the so-called "baccalaureate rigor" standard, and other related curricular issues.
Faculty from around the state have been critical of these initiatives, saying they will result in a decreased emphasis on technical and occupational training, adversely impact under-prepared students, lengthen time to degree, and decrease graduation rates. http://www.weac.org/constit/wtcs/techmemo/2004-05/11_30/1.htm Glowing reviews for the WTCS
Recent surveys by the Wood Communications Group and the Wisconsin Technical College District Boards Association show that Wisconsin residents believe the state's technical colleges are a highly valued resource that positively affects the Wisconsin economy.
According to the poll, only one-third of those surveyed would support a constitutional ammendment if it would lead to reduced WTCS course offerings or enrollment limitations. http://www.weac.org/constit/wtcs/techmemo/2004-05/11_30/3.htm Speaker's Taskforce on the WTCS meets
The Speaker's Taskforce on the WTCS met on October 14 to review progress on the draft recommendations it issued in fall 2003.
Formed in summer 2003, the taskforce issued recommendations to Assembly Speaker John Gard on a number of topics including credit transfer, duplication between the WTCS and UW System, district board governance, WTCS funding, and WTCS state board authority.
