At the 2001 National Education Association Representative Assembly, a new business item officially changed the support staff name from Educational Support Personnel to Education Support Professionals. The change was adopted by a majority vote of the delegates.
After the successful vote, Alaska school secretary, Karen Mahurin, who introduced the NBI, said, "This name change to 'professional' acknowledges the major contribution ESP make for children and public education. We impact the lives of children every day, maybe not in the classroom but in our own, special and professional way."
Delegates to the 2002 WEAC Representative Assembly will have the opportunity
to vote on adopting the name change for use in Wisconsin. The Assembly
will convene April 26-28 in La Crosse.
