On January 8, 2002 President Bush signed the reauthorized Elementary
and Secondary Education Act into law. ESEA is also being called "The
No Child Left Behind Act of 2001."
There is a change in regulations under ESEA that impacts Title I paraprofessionals (teachers' aides).
The new law requires that not later than three years after enactment, all [Title I] teachers' aides must have:
Local associations representing Title I paraprofessionals are encouraged to work with their UniServ Directors to plan for bargaining the impact of this new requirement. At the state level, WEAC is examining delivery of training under the requirements and will keep you informed of clarifications and other developments.
