The Educational Support Professionals (ESP) Certificate program is a
unique professional development opportunity offered through the WEA Professional
Development Academy.
The program, which began in 1994, was developed cooperatively with the
UW System. The Academy oversees the program, but other providers offer
the actual instruction universities, technical colleges, CESAs,
school districts, and professional associations.
To earn a Level I certificate, participants must complete 40 hours of
learning in core and elective categories. Level II requires an additional
80 hours of instruction; filing of an Individual Learning Plan; completion
of a written, reflective summary of learning experiences; and two years
of work experience in an education setting.
Currently, close to 5,000 support staff are working toward a Level I
certificate, and nearly 200 have obtained one.
About 45 support staff are participating in the Level II program this
year, and six have earned one.
For more information on how you can become involved in pursuing the ESP Certificate, contact PDA Director Debra Berndt at 800-362-8034, extension 294, or at berndtd@weac.org.
