Why Vote for Union Representation?

Because you deserve . . .

Pay for preparation time:

Part-timers report that at the end of preparing for, teaching, and evaluating a class their pay can be as low as $5 per hour.

. . .With union representation, Part-time faculty can negotiate fair wages.

More professional services:

Do you have an office? a desk? Is getting mail or duplicating or a projector a hassle?

. . .With union representation, Part-time faculty can negotiate needed support services.

A voice in academic decisions:

Many of the things that make you better prepared also make student learning betterC time for professional improvement and training, more time to meet with students, increased input into departmental and curricular decisions.

. . .With union representation, Part-time faculty can gain this voice.

More assignment predictability:

Have you spent time preparing a course only to have it canceled . . . or offered to someone else?

. . .With union representation, Part-time faculty can negotiate a procedure for assignments.

A safer teaching environment:

Have you been alone or practically so in a building? Have you wondered in a center school how you'd get help in a medical emergency when no evening supervisor is about or the phones are locked in an office?

. . .With union representation, Part-time faculty can deal with this problem as a group.

Access to full-time work:

Those who are interested in full-time work ought to be able to get it rather than being passed over because of their part-time faculty work.

. . .With union representation, Part-time faculty can negotiate priority in hiring.

Union services and benefits you'll be eligible to receive in addition to negotiation representation:

How much are WCTEA dues, and when would representation start?

Professional dues will range from $1 a week if you teach one class to $5 a week for part-timers with a half-time teaching load. Dues will be pro-rated over the weeks you work. You'll pay only for the time you're working.

The equivalent of one cup of coffee or one can of soda per class can provide you with the protections, representation and benefits of WCTEA membership.

Immediately following a "YES" vote, bargaining will begin on these and other issues. The experience at both MATCs is that conditions and pay are improved in the first contract, and they continue to improve with each new contract.
