WCTC Part-Time United Faculty

- News Update #7 -

November 3, 1998

Visits Send Message: We support you! We want you to join us!

Over 150 part-time faculty at WCTC teaching sites throughout the district had visits from the WCTEA and part-time faculty volunteers during the first two weeks in October. Part-time faculty received informational brochures and other useful items.

If you havent been visited yet, the faculty volunteers will be making more site visits this weekend, November 6-7, for Friday/Saturday classes. The WCTEA volunteers will be available to answer questions and share printed information with you!

Most Frequent Questions & Answers During The October Visits

Q. When is the election?

A. The election date will be set by the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission, most likely in February, March or April of 1999. We will know the exact date about one month prior to the election. We will let you know the date as soon as it is determined.

Q. What will the Union do for me?

A. The Union will represent you on the issues and concerns of part-time faculty. The Union can and will enter into a legal contract with the employer covering part-time faculty pay, benefits, and working conditions. In addition, Union membership provides you with an effective voice on both the state and national levels that speaks on behalf of educators and education.

Q. What will happen to my seniority?

A. Currently, part-time faculty have no guarantee of work from assignment to assignment. Our goal is to negotiate contract language that will establish seniority based on length of time as a WCTC employee, and that will be used as a basis for continued employment and a factor in choice of assignment.

Q. What will joining the Union cost?

A. Union dues will be prorated, based on how much you teach, and will be in effect for the time period during which you teach. Union dues will range from about $1 a week for a 10% teaching load to approximately $5 for a teaching load of just under 50%. If you do not work for a portion of or for an entire semester, you do not pay union dues for that time period.
