Mission statement:

The mission of WEAC-Retired is to provide for the economic, social, and political welfare of its members and to sustain quality public school systems for Wisconsin citizens by supporting the principles and programs of the Wisconsin Education Association Council.

Pre-Retired Subscriber or Already Retired Member Enrollment

When you retire, you only retire from your job. You don't lose interest in the profession that you've been employed in for so many years nor do you walk away from the various friendships that you've developed in your career.

Like many other retired association members, you'll want to continue a relationship with your colleagues, local association, UniServ unit, WEAC and NEA.
A pre-retired subscriber is a WEAC active member of any age who prepays their retired life membership.

Pre-retired membership status

When you join WEAC-Retired before you retire, you're actually considered a pre-retired subscriber. A pre-retired subscriber is a WEAC member of any age who prepays their retired life membership dues before retirement.  As a pre-retired subscriber you may attend WEAC-Retired meetings and conferences at your own or your UniServ’s/local’s expense. However, because of your status as an Active member, you may not vote in Retired governance elections.

Unrestricted Retired Life membership begins once you provide written notice to the WEAC Membership Department that you have retired.

Also, include the address below on the linked enrollment form for the pre-retired subscribers.

Why wait until retirement to join?
There's no need to wait until retirement to join WEAC-Retired. You may take out your pre-retired subscriber membership today! Don't delay and pay more in the long run as a result of dues increases being enacted.

Becoming a member

Option #1: TO JOIN A CHAPTER, WEAC-RETIRED & NEA-RETIRED - This chart lists the current WEAC-Retired chapters. (A chapter is based loosely around the locals comprising a UniServ.) If a chapter is listed for your former UniServ, you may join it along with WEAC-Retired/NEA-Retired. Print and complete the enrollment form and mail it with your check for the total life dues amount indicated on the chart to the person/office listed in the far right hand column of the chart. Make check payable to the chapter.

Option #2: TO JOIN JUST WEAC-RETIRED & NEA-RETIRED - Complete the enrollment form and mail it, with your check for the life or annual dues amount indicated, to: WEAC-Retired Membership, PO Box 45407, Madison WI 53744-5407. Make check payable to WEAC-Retired. Print and complete the enrollment form, then mail it with your dues check or money order.

Who will represent you as a retiree?
WEAC active members belong to a local association that negotiates contracts covering their working conditions, salary, and such benefits as optional early retirement, post-retirement insurance benefits and employer payment of the employer and employee annual contributions to the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS).

As a retiree, WEAC-Retired will represent your interests. It:

  • Safeguards WRS benefits from political raids by insuring that WEAC-Retired members are actively involved on WE-ACT teams (grassroots member lobbyist groups);
  • Protection of your WRS benefits. In 1987 the governor and Legislature raided the WRS. For 10 years, WEAC fought on behalf of its retired members, investing the services of three full-time attorneys and more than 5,000 hours of legal work in the case. The 1997 the State Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the raid was illegal and ordered the state to repay the money plus interest.
  • Proposals and lobbies for WRS benefit improvements;
  • Evaluates candidate positions on retirement issues when interviewing and recommending candidates for political office; and
  • Protects WRS benefits by keeping members informed and involved in political and lobbying efforts.

What is WEAC-Retired?
WEAC-Retired is a statewide affiliate of the Wisconsin Education Association Council specifically for retired public school employees. It was formed in 1994 and has more than 7,300 members and 22 chapters.

WEAC-Retired is affiliated with the NEA through the NEA-Retired. NEA-Retired has approximately 185,000 members. Concurrent life membership in NEA-Retired is required.

Governance
WEAC-Retired chapters: Each chapter has an elected board of directors. Topical programs are offered regularly and a general membership meeting is held annually.

Membership doesn't cost…it pays!
Improving WRS benefits: Wisconsin ACT 11 resulted in an approximate 10% pension increase for annuitants. For active members it increased the formula factor to 1.765 for pre-2000 service, removed the money purchase calculation earning cap, restored the variable investment option, and changed the death benefit to treat all participants and their beneficiaries equally. WEAC-Retired, via its affiliation with WEAC, was the only Wisconsin public education retiree organization that sponsored this legislation and defended it before the Wisconsin and U.S. Supreme Courts.

Protecting WRS benefits: In 1987, the state raided WRS funds for economic development purposes. In 1997, the State Supreme Court unanimously ruled the raid illegal and ordered the state to repay the money plus interest. WEAC fought for 10 years on behalf of its members, investing over 5,000 hours of legal work in the case.
