Stay connected with colleagues, your local association, UniServ, WEAC, NEA and other education personnel working to protect state pension benefits, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the well being of public education. Other benefits:

  • Improvement of your WRS benefits. Act 11, the 1999 WRS Pension Improvement Legislation ruled constitutional
by the Wisconsin and US Supreme Courts, resulted in all retirees receiving an approximate 10% increase in their monthly pension annuity. It also:
    • increased the formula factor from 1.6 to 1.765,
    • removed the 5% earnings cap for money purchase calculations that had penalized all participants hired since January 1, 1982,
    • changed the death benefit to treat all participants and their chosen beneficiaries equally,
    • created a mechanism to reduce past un-funded liabilities, improve the fund's financial health, and
    • restore the variable investment option.
WEAC-Retired, via its affiliation with WEAC, was the only public education retiree organization that sponsored this legislation and defended it before the Wisconsin and US Supreme Court.

  • Protection of your WRS benefits. In 1987 the governor and Legislature raided the WRS. For 10 years, WEAC fought on behalf of its retired members, investing the services of three full-time attorneys and more than 5,000 hours of legal work in the case. The 1997 the State Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the raid was illegal and ordered the state to repay the money plus interest.
