Job Title: Public Relations Specialist, Cat. I Professional
Employment in accord with the WEAC/USU Collective Bargaining Agreement
Location: Public Relations

Reports To: Kim Haas, Director

Job Purpose: This position will be responsible for providing professional service and strategic communications expertise for the WEAC Public Relations Department in the focus areas related to developing and executing statewide media programs and communications campaigns and assisting with the statewide media relations program.

Job Functions:
• Assist with the development and implementation of WEAC’s media relations program.
• Coordinate media interviews and editorial board visits, working with WEAC’s media relations officer, WEAC management and news reporters.
• Provide analysis of WEAC’s media relations efforts by monitoring and tracking coverage and establishing results reports.
• Assist with blogging efforts to inform staff and leaders of news issues affecting WEAC members and public education.
• Edit and proofread the writing of other WEAC staff and WEAC managers.
• Assist with the development, implementation and promotion of WEAC’s paid media program.
• Copywriting: Write and edit ad copy for print, radio, billboard, television and Web ads.
• Media buying/placement: Work with media firms and outlets to negotiate media buys and coordinate placement.
• Support for communications programs and community relations.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of the media buying/planning process and a solid understanding of Wisconsin’s media market.
• Excellent writing and editing skills.
• Ability to promote and adhere to the policies and procedures adopted by the WEAC Board of Directors and Representative Assembly.
• Ability to maintain the confidentiality of individual member(s) concerns in a professional and confidential manner.
• A team player, organized and able to respond well to pressure and deadlines.
• Excellent communications planning and organizational skills.
• Excellent personal communications skills.
• Ability to handle out of office tasks, participate in conferences and conventions with the ability to travel.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• BA in a communications-field (Journalism or Communications, with emphasis in advertising and/or public relations) and five years experience.
• Comfort working with the news media and reporters on deadline.
• Previous experience in all aspects of media buying/planning, communications strategy, implementation and media measurement/evaluation.
• Possess high degree of technical skills to support team’s growing use of Web 2.0 and social media applications..
• Strong command of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Salary and Fringe Benefits: As negotiated between Wisconsin Education Association Council and the United Staff Union Professional Staff (Category 1). Salary range $66,583-$77,683. Fringes include, but are not limited to, employer-paid health, dental, life, long-term disability insurance, vision, long-term care insurance, liberal retirement package; vacation/sick/personal leave; training funds.
