Betsy Kippers, a physical education teacher in the Racine Unified School District for 30 years, began her term as the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) vice president in August 2010. Previously, she served as WEAC’s secretary-treasurer for three years.

Kippers is a longtime union advocate, as well as a dedicated teacher. A department and unit leader at her school, she also served as coordinator of the physical education area and middle school athletics program. She was co-chair of the District Partnership Committee and served on the Professional Development Committee. She has been a member of the state and national organizations representing physical education teachers and is a regular presenter and trainer at state and national workshops.

Kippers served three years as a member of the WEAC Board of Directors, as well as three years as an alternate. She was a member of the WEAC Budget and Finance Committee for two years.

Kippers was president of the Racine Education Association (REA) for three years, receiving the President’s Recognition Award twice. She was REA vice president for three years and treasurer for 12 years. She was a delegate to the WEAC and National Education Association (NEA) Representative Assemblies. She is past chair of REA committees including Public Relations, Welfare and Negotiations. She is a past member of the REA Special Education Caucus and the Elections Committee. As REA treasurer, she formed the organization’s first budget committee and helped develop a budget to reflect members’ needs. She phased in an annual audit and developed a manual for general financial operations.

WEAC is a professional organization representing the public policy, labor and professional interests of its more than 98,000 members. Great schools benefit everyone, and WEAC’s mission is to support public education and the men and women who work in Wisconsin’s public schools.
