Outreach to Teach 2000

Lindbergh Elementary School

Madison, Wisconsin

On April 1 and 2, 2000, the Student Wisconsin Education Association participated in the second annual Outreach to Teach at Lindbergh Elementary School, in Madison, Wisconsin.

Student WEA members, along with a cadre of others, came together, rolled up their sleeves, and got down to business.  Projects included creating word walls and bulletin boards, repainting playground maps and equipment, assembling storage and display cabinets and playground equipment, painting murals, planting flowers and shrubs, donating books and supplies, in addition to much more.

After an extensive application process, Lindbergh Elementary School, with a population of 260 students, was chosen because of its urban location and high minority student population.  Lindbergh Elementary, like so many others in the state, reflected the strain that revenue controls can have on public schools.

“All the hard work of organizing the 2nd annual Outreach to Teach project paid off.  Volunteers, school staff, the community, and administrators were thoroughly impressed with the magnitude of the project,” states Jessica Flyte, this year’s Outreach coordinator from UW-Stevens Point.  The future educators of Wisconsin truly care about the communities they will be a part of.  By helping to lift the burden of revenue controls, the Student Wisconsin Education Association is helping teachers and administrators continue providing quality education to the youth of Wisconsin.

Renee Helgeson, UW-Stevens Point, and Katie Hess, also of UW-Stevens Point, pause to share the mural of Lindbergh’s plane painted on the gym wall.
